Trauma and parts work therapy; making sense of anxiety, emotions and more

Have you ever been going about your day and for what seems like no reason you suddenly feel uneasy, shaky and on edge or become upset or tearful? Possibly an emotional memory became triggered. As we go about our daily life, we have times throughout the day that cause a reaction in us. Sometimes we may feel that we handle something well and other times our reaction can catch us out and we wonder what happened. You might have had moments where your reaction feels bigger than the situation.

You know logically that you’re safe.
You know you’re not a child anymore.
And yet something in you tightens, shuts down, panics… or lashes out.

It can feel confusing. Even frustrating.
Like part of you understands—and another part takes over anyway. This in turn then causes our anxiety to peak as we try to make sense of what is going on internally.

This is often where parts work therapy begins.

What is Parts Work Therapy?

Parts work therapy is an approach that helps you understand the different parts of yourself—especially the ones that carry emotions you may never have had the words to express. As a child maybe your needs were not always met or you experienced trauma.

Rather than seeing yourself as one fixed identity, parts work recognises that we all have different inner experiences, for example:

  • a part that is highly driven and holds everything together
  • a part that feels anxious or overwhelmed
  • a part that shuts down or avoids feeling too much

These parts aren’t random or “too much.”
They developed to help you cope.

Why Do Emotions Get Stored in the Body?

Many of the emotions we struggle with as adults didn’t start in adulthood.

They often come from earlier experiences—especially times when:

  • emotions weren’t acknowledged
  • you didn’t feel safe to express yourself
  • there wasn’t support to process what you were feeling

When this happens, the body becomes stuck.

Instead of emotions being processed and released, they can become stored in the body as:

  • tension
  • tightness
  • anxiety
  • a sense of shutting down

This is why you might feel something strongly without fully understanding why.

How Childhood Experiences Shape Your Emotional Parts

Some emotional parts of you formed before you even had language to explain what you were going through.

For example:

  • a younger part may still hold fear from feeling unsafe
  • another part may carry the belief that you need to be “perfect” to be accepted
  • another may have learned to disconnect to avoid overwhelm

These parts don’t disappear as you grow up.
They stay with you—often quietly influencing how you feel, react, and relate to others.

Why Your Reactions Can Feel So Intense

When something in the present moment triggers one of these parts, your response can feel disproportionate.

That’s because you’re not just reacting to now—you’re also feeling:

  • past emotions
  • unmet needs
  • experiences that were never fully processed

And sometimes these experiences could have even been pre-verbal, they show up as:

  • body sensations
  • emotional flooding
  • reactions that don’t quite make logical sense

It’s not that you’re overreacting.
It’s that something deeper is being activated.

How Parts Work Therapy Helps

Parts work therapy helps you build a relationship with these different parts of yourself, rather than fighting or suppressing them.

In therapy, you might begin to:

  • notice when a certain part is activated
  • understand what that part is trying to protect you from
  • explore how old that part feels
  • gently process the emotions it’s been holding

Over time, this creates space and understanding between you and the reaction.

Instead of feeling taken over, you begin to feel:

  • more grounded
  • more aware
  • more compassionate toward yourself

From Self-Criticism to Self-Understanding

One of the most powerful shifts in parts work is moving from:

“Why am I like this?”
to
“Which part of me needs attention right now?”

That shift alone can soften a lot of internal pressure.

Because instead of seeing yourself as the problem, you begin to understand that different parts of you have been trying to cope in the only ways they knew how.

Parts Work Therapy in Stowmarket Suffolk and Online

If you’re noticing patterns like emotional overwhelm, anxiety, or shutdown responses, parts work therapy can help you make sense of what’s happening internally.

I offer parts work therapy in Stowmarket Suffolk and online across the UK, providing a space where you can explore these experiences safely and at your own pace.

You’re Not “Too Much” — You’re Carrying Something

If your emotions feel intense or confusing, it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you.

It often means there’s a part of you that learned to carry something difficult—without the support it needed at the time.

With the right therapeutic support, those parts can be understood, processed, and integrated in a way that feels less overwhelming.

A Gentle Reflection

What if, instead of asking
“What’s wrong with me?”

You asked,
“Which part of me is trying to be heard?”

If this resonates…

You’re welcome to get in touch if you’d like to explore this further.
Therapy can offer a space to gently understand and process what your body—and your inner parts—have been holding.
