Doomscrolling, News Fatigue, and Finding Balance

Doomscrolling News Fatigue and the Inevitability of Overwhelm

It often feels as though the world is moving at a relentless pace, with a constant stream of events unfolding every day. With our phones never far from reach, it is almost impossible not to remain informed. However, there comes a point when being informed tips over into becoming overwhelmed. The question then arises: how do we manage the emotions that accompany this overload?
It is vital to recognise when you have reached your limit.

The Impact of Continuous News Consumption

The never-ending flow of updates, headlines, and breaking news can leave us with little opportunity to process what we are taking in, let alone find time to switch off. This barrage can foster a sense of helplessness, making it difficult to comprehend world events while also juggling the demands of our own lives. Digital overload does not just deplete our energy; it can also negatively affect our mood, heighten anxiety, and even disturb our sleep.

Recognising and Managing Your Limits

It is vital to recognise when you have reached your limit. Establishing digital boundaries—such as restricting news checks to set times of the day or unfollowing sources that contribute to stress—can help restore a sense of balance. Equally, seeking out positive news stories and engaging in activities that anchor you in the present, such as spending time outdoors, connecting with loved ones, or simply allowing yourself to unplug without guilt, can be beneficial.

Regular Self-Check-Ins

Developing a habit of regularly checking in with yourself is a valuable practice to integrate into your daily routine. I often encourage my clients to do this by asking themselves ‘How am I today?’ and ‘What do I need today?’ From there, try to pay attention to the emotions that come up, giving them space—yes even the uncomfortable ones! —so that they can be acknowledged and processed.

Allowing Yourself to Step Back

It is perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information available. Give yourself permission to pause and recognise that you cannot absorb or respond to everything. Instead, focus on what is within your control, whether that’s finding something to be involved in locally or simply taking care of your own wellbeing.
