Choosing Therapy

Starting therapy can feel like a daunting step, yet it is often the most courageous one towards understanding yourself and improving your well-being. It’s a space where you explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences with someone who is there to support and guide you without judgment. Therapy is deeply personal, and finding the right fit is crucial to its success.

When considering how to choose the right therapist, start by identifying your own needs and preferences. Reflect on the challenges you’re facing and the type of support you feel would benefit you most. Are you looking for help with managing stress, navigating trauma, or addressing underlying patterns of behaviour? Different therapists have varying areas of expertise, so understanding this can guide your search effectively.

Therapy requires consistency, so finding someone whose schedule aligns with yours and whose fees fit your budget is important. Don’t hesitate to ask questions during our initial consultation; this is your opportunity to learn about my approach and see if it resonates with you. Trust your instincts—feeling comfortable and safe with your therapist is essential for creating a space where meaningful progress can unfold.

Many clients come to me after feeling that they’ve failed at therapy because they’ve been steered in the wrong direction for what they needed, as a result it wasn’t successful.

What kind of therapist am I?

I work with anxiety and depression, low mood and trauma. This is based in emotion and finding a connection with your emotions again. This may seem like a scary prospect, but we go at your pace, this is your time, and you are in control! We will look at your thinking styles, inner beliefs and defences. It’s here we can unpick what you believe about yourself and how you speak to yourself. This is where change begins to happen.

Finding a connection

Finding a therapist that ‘gets you’ is key to building a relationship with your therapist, when you begin to feel seen and heard, therapy will start to work for you. This doesn’t make it a quick fix, therapy takes time, but there will be changes and improvements along the way even when they don’t feel like it. I work in a way that’s best for longer term therapy; we get to the root rather than fixing the surface.

A bit about me

My journey to becoming a therapist was far from straightforward. It began with my own struggles and the realization that understanding the mind and emotions was not only fascinating but also deeply healing. I didn’t start out in this field—in fact, I explored a few different paths before I truly found my calling. But it was through these experiences, and the challenges I faced along the way, that I gained insight into the human experience and the resilience we all carry within us.

Training to be a therapist was a transformative process in itself. I immersed myself in studies and practical experiences, learning not just about theory but also about the nuances of truly listening to another person’s story. I trained in various approaches, from cognitive-behavioural techniques to emotion-focused therapy, ensuring I could adapt my methods to suit each individual’s unique needs.

Becoming a therapist wasn’t just about gaining qualifications—it was about personal growth. I had to confront my own inner dialogues, biases, and defenses, refining not just my skills but also my empathy. This journey taught me that therapy is as much about connection as it is about knowledge. It’s about walking alongside someone in their darkest moments and helping them find their way to the light.

Every step of this path has reaffirmed my belief in the power of therapy to transform lives. It’s what drives me every day—a commitment to creating a safe space where others can heal, grow, and reclaim their sense of self.

Taking the next step

I hope by reading this it has helped you to have a clearer understanding of what therapy is all about. A client one described it as taking your brain to the gym! It can be challenging but the rewards are worth it.
